Antique magic lantern slide projector. Circa 1880s.
Originally, there would have been a bright paraffin lamp enclosed within the tin back section. These would have allowed glass slides to be projected onto a screen or wall.
These simple devices were used for entertainment before the days of television, being one of the only ways to project large colour images on a screen.
