These hair tidies or hair receivers were used in the late Victorian/ Edwardian period.
After the lady had brushed her hair, she would take the hair from the brush and place it through the central hole in the pot.
The saved hair could be used in several ways. The worst sounding use was winding the hair into "rats". Rats in this context was hair placed into a net and used to increase the volume of the lady's hair when it was tied into a bun.
Other uses would include stuffing pin cushions or other small items.
